As your child’s school nurse, I want to remind you of the importance of getting your son or daughter vaccinated before this fall. Vaccines are the best way you can protect your child from a number of serious diseases, including cancers caused by HPV.

As you are making your back to school checklist for your teen, I encourage you to make sure your sons and daughters get all the vaccines that are recommended for them. Schedule your child’s appointment today to ensure they are up-to-date on the vaccines they need.

This fall ODH (Ohio Department of Health) is requiring all students entering the 7th grade to have a Tdap booster and a Meningococcal vaccine. All students entering the 12th grade must have 2 Meningococcal vaccines unless the first one was given after age 16.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for preteens at age 11 or 12 to protect against cancers and other diseases caused by HPV infection. Both boys and girls should receive three doses of the HPV vaccine to protect against this serious disease.

Preteens and teens should also get the flu vaccine every year, ideally as soon as the vaccine is available.

Protect your child and talk with your healthcare provider about what vaccines they need. I can be reached at 216-692-0086 ext 571334 with any concerns. To learn more about adolescent vaccines, please visit CDC’s (Center for Disease Control) website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/teens.
