FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 21, 2020 Media Contact: Dr. Renée Willis willis.renee@richmondheightsschools.org 216.692.8485 Richmond Heights Local Schools Receives Nearly $100,000 Grant from The Collaborative Fund for Educating Remotely and Transforming Schools Richmond Heights, Ohio - Richmond Heights Local Schools (RHLS) is the recent recipient of a grant from The Collaborative Fund for Educating Remotely and Transforming Schools, a fund whose partnership aims to help schools and districts improve remote education practices and outcomes and to use remote education as a catalyst for re-imagining and re-engineering the delivery of high-quality caring, teaching, and learning opportunities for Ohio’s underserved students. For RHLS, this means funding their Hope Squad to Learning Pod initiative, an adaptive response to the changes in traditional learning measures necessitated by the pandemic. “Because in-person learning is not possible in our district, we were forced to seek alternative learning sites, additional staff, and innovative endeavors to address the myriad needs of our vulnerable student body,” says District Superintendent Dr. Renée Willis. The grant will help bolster some of these endeavors and afford students access to high-quality education through Learning Pods, a safe, campus-based instructional environment where students will have the support of teaching staff and aides to help them navigate any challenges that may arise during the school day. In addition, students are provided with a personal device with reliable connectivity and all physical materials and supplies to complement their learning experience. The Learning Pods will also ease parental anxiety about where their children will receive instruction, solving a notably problematic issue for parents who work outside of the home and for those without reliable Internet access. The effects of this financial support will go a long toward helping students, teachers, and parents engage meaningfully with respect to not only students’ academic wellbeing, but also their social, and emotional health, as grant provisions will enable students to participate in socio-emotional instruction as well. This is a key component of the Hope Squad to Learning Pod initiative, as administrators recognize the additional difficulties families face because of COVID-19 related trauma. Willis and her Hope Squad understand that a safe, stimulating environment, positive interaction, and students having the tools they need to participate in class is vital to a high-quality education. This need has only been amplified by the pandemic, and so has her team’s resolve. “We are committed to helping our students, staff, and families thrive, even and especially in these volatile times. We’re grateful to have more resources to help us meet our children where they are.” "Prepare individual learners to navigate an evolving global community using 21st century competencies." www.richmondheightsschools.org

There is no institution more critical in the fight for racial equity than education. Yet, our education system remains subject to the very ailments that perpetuate structures of inequity and exclusion. For example, in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), Black students are 1.7 times more likely to be suspended than white students. Conversely, white students in CMSD are 1.9 times more likely to be enrolled in honors programs than Black students. The livestream will be available beginning at 12:30 p.m. Have questions? RICHMOND HTS. GRADUATION RATE WENT FROM “D” TO A “B” Dr. Renee Willis relayed to us that around this time of the year, the State of Ohio releases its coveted Report Cards. Due to Covid-19, we did not access students, so grade cards are not available. However, ODE continued to collect data and this year’s version of the report card reflect all the hard work we put into being intentional. Numbers reported are released one year later, reflecting the prior year, not the graduating class of 2020. Richmond Heights graduation rate went from a “D” to a “B” in one school year & this is cause for celebration. ~City of Richmond Heights September 25, 2020 | Volume 105
